“Jo makes sounds no one else can”

In February 2023 she won Best Original Score at White Deer Film Festival for silent short film Ghosted, and in summer 2023 won the award for best score in a narrative film at VSBIFF for The Haunting Of The Lady Jane.

She’s scored two games, both available via Steam.

Jo’s work in theatre has included plays with tours around the UK, and runs at both the Brighton and Edinburgh Fringes. Jo has worked in both pre-recorded and live theatre scores.

Jo has a masters degree in composition from the University of Birmingham, having specialised in combining acoustic and electronic sound worlds. During her undergraduate she specialised in romantic violin performance practice and acoustic composition. She has studied with Jonty Harrison and Michael Zev Gordon. She is currently completing her doctorate in applying musique concrete compositional techniques to films at de Montford University, studying under John Young and Bret Battey.

Jo also works as an orchestrator and score engraver. She regularly works with clients around the world, and provides everything from ghost-written piano teaching resources to full scores for orchestral recording sessions.

From June 2019 to June 2022 Jo was part of BAFTA Crew X BFI Network before becoming a full member of BAFTA in 2023. She’s a member of PRS and WFTV.

When not writing music, Jo is normally to be found halfway up a mountain or drinking tea. She has a very good dog.

Jo is a sonic story teller and multi award winning composer. Working in styles ranging from orchestras to the avant garde, she has collaborated with directors and devs across the globe to create unique music for their projects.

A mentee on the prestigious Woman And Film In TV UK (WFTVUK) mentorship scheme 2026, and a full voting member of BAFTA, Jo is fascinated by sound and how it can bring films to life. Jo believes a unique story needs a unique sound, and works closely with her collaborators to build a carefully constructed sonic world for every project she’s part of. She has a huge passion for helping tell previously untold stories from across the world and supporting underrepresented film makers.

Jo works across multiple disciplines thanks to her training as an orchestral violinist and avant garden composer. She is equally comfortable creating music for orchestral ensembles as she is for a salad spinner. Obsessed with unheard sounds, she spends hours recording pond-skaters on rivers, waves crashing on rocks, and creaking metal hinges before transforming them into musical material. She also believes that working with real instruments is an integral part of composition and regularly self-performs on her work.

With over 50 credits under her belt, Jo has scored a number of feature films on Amazon Prime. Her music can also be found on the BBC (BBC2, Radio 4), Channel 4, ITV, Netflix, and major global TV and radio stations. She served as a judge on the TV BAFTA Craft awards in 2023 and 2025. Her work has been mixed in major UK studios such as Warner Brother’s De Lane Lea and Twickenham Film Studios. She works with major UK music library companies such as West One and BAM. She was also a mentee on the competitive AWFC scheme in 2023, and was mentored by RTS award winner Morgan Kibby.
